Constructive criticism in a book review

One of the benefits of having a free download day on Amazon Kindle select is that you just might be lucky enough to pick up a few reviews. I was very pleased to have Vantastic Van reviewed by those lovely people at The French Village Diaries, which is where you can read my latest review.

One of the benefits that you sometimes get from a review is a little constructive criticism, which for a new author like myself is invaluable. The point in question was that I over explained some things, which  I  maybe tend to do as I felt that maybe some readers might not be following the story so I did a little backtracking on it, which is something that I need to work on.

This is going to be a big challenge for me in the follow up to Vantastic France, as I need to relate the new story to the old one or it might not make sense. On the other hand I have to make the story new and interesting enough for readers that might have read the previous version, without going over too much old ground. I will also have to get all my fact correct from the previous book or I am sure some eagle eyed reader will rightly pick it up.

I have no problems creating stories, in fact once I start writing my imagination goes wild and I cannot type fast enough. This is why I will require some professional help when I have my final draft. Luckily again via Twitter I have come into contact with some experts who have offered help and guidance in this field, so I will know exactly who to turn to when the time comes.

Thanks again to Jacqui at The French Village Diaries for her review.

  1. Steph says:

A first novel is exactly that – a first foray into a new art form. No new author gets everything absolutely right first time. That’s the fun of writing. You learn all the time while enjoying yourself!

  2. Well it’s quite a ride so far Steph, and a few shilling are rolling in as well, showing my age there!

  3. It was a pleasure for me reading about Barry and Linda in Brittany, Steve, and I’m glad you are thinking of a follow up. ps you are in good company as I also thought JK Rowling rather over explained things in the 2nd Harry Potter book 🙂

  4. Yes I am sure we compare well, lol
